Shubman Gill has etched his name into cricketing history by surpassing Pakistan legend Mohammad Yousuf to become the highest-scoring Asian batsman in a single Test series on English soil.
Gill accomplished the feat on Day 4 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, where he crossed Yousuf’s tally of 631 runs from 2006. With an unbeaten 87 at stumps, his series aggregate now stands at 632 runs. The milestone came quietly during the second session, but its significance was immediately recognized by cricket pundits worldwide.
What makes the achievement even more impressive is the context: this is Gill’s debut Test series as India’s captain, having taken charge on May 24, 2025. He’s already scored three centuries and is closing in on another prestigious landmark—Virat Kohli’s 655 runs in the 2016 home series against England, the most ever by an Indian captain in a bilateral Test series against them.
Gill’s consistency in seaming conditions has also broken ground among Asian batters in SENA nations (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia), overtaking previous efforts by Rahul Dravid and Kohli. No other Asian has amassed more in a SENA Test series.
At the other end of the crease, KL Rahul’s composed 78 has helped India recover after early wickets, ending Day 4 at 174/2. With India trailing by 137 runs, the final day promises intense cricket and potentially more records for the young captain.
As the spotlight remains on Gill, fans and analysts alike are waiting to see whether he can overtake Kohli’s record before the series concludes.
