Karachi’s public transport system is poised for a major boost as the Sindh government has confirmed that double-decker buses will begin operating in the city next month.
Minister Confirms Rollout Timeline
Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon shared the exciting news on Monday, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving public transportation.
“We’ve already rolled out the Pink Bus service to great reception, and now we’re preparing to launch the Pink Taxi service dedicated to women,” said Minister Memon. “With the double-decker buses, we’re taking another step toward easing traffic woes and providing reliable options for everyone.”
Fleet Expansion and Modernization
The upcoming fleet includes five double-decker buses and 34 electric buses, all scheduled to arrive in June. In addition, 100 more buses are planned for later in the month, ensuring that the city’s growing transportation needs are met.
Officials note that these new buses will be a game-changer for daily commuters. Double-decker buses, in particular, offer higher passenger capacity and improved comfort, addressing long-standing issues like overcrowding and extended wait times.
Focus on Women’s Mobility and Safety
The transport minister also discussed the broader inclusivity goals of the expansion, pointing to the Pink Taxi service as an example of how the government is prioritizing women’s mobility and safety in public spaces.
A Vision for Karachi’s Future
These initiatives are part of the larger Peoples Bus Service program, which aims to modernize public transport in Pakistan’s largest city. With a focus on sustainability and accessibility, the Sindh government is actively working to transform Karachi’s streets for the better.
Residents are already expressing anticipation for the upcoming changes, which are expected to improve not just daily commutes but also the overall urban environment.
