NEPRA Announces Rs. 1.23 Per Unit Cut in Electricity Prices for February

Relief for Electricity Consumers as NEPRA Approves Price Reduction

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved a reduction of Rs. 1.23 per unit in electricity tariffs for February, providing much-needed relief to consumers, as per ARY News.

This adjustment is part of the monthly fuel adjustment for December and will be reflected in February’s electricity bills. However, the price cut does not apply to lifeline consumers and electric vehicle charging stations.

K-Electric Consumers to Benefit from Tariff Reduction

The decision also extends to K-Electric (KE) consumers, with the same Rs. 1.23 per unit decrease applied under the monthly fuel adjustment for November. This move is expected to ease the financial burden on Karachi residents, who frequently face fluctuating electricity rates.

NEPRA issued a formal notification detailing the reduction, ensuring that eligible consumers across the country will see the impact on their upcoming bills.

Rs. 52.12 Billion Tariff Reduction Request by Power Companies

The tariff cut follows a petition filed by power distribution companies, seeking a reduction of Rs. 52.12 billion as part of the second quarterly adjustment for the current fiscal year. The petition included:

  • Rs. 50.66 billion reduction in capacity charges
  • Rs. 2.66 billion adjustment for transmission and distribution losses
  • Rs. 2.69 billion cut in operation and maintenance expenses

This large-scale reduction aims to stabilize electricity prices and support consumers struggling with high energy costs.

PM Shehbaz Vows Further Reductions Through Power Sector Reforms

On February 7, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized his government’s commitment to further lowering electricity prices through reforms. While presiding over a review meeting in Islamabad, he stated that:

  • Agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are being revised to cut costs.
  • Measures to reduce transmission losses have already shown positive results.
  • A campaign against power theft is in full swing, aiming to eliminate losses in the energy sector.

With these ongoing reforms, consumers can expect more stable and affordable electricity rates in the future.
