Karachi Tree-Cutting Case: SHC Steps In to Protect Sharea Faisal’s Green Lifeline

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has taken notice of large-scale tree cutting along Sharea Faisal, Karachi’s busiest artery. The case began when a citizen petitioned the court, alleging that hundreds of mature trees were being felled in violation of environmental laws and judicial orders.

Sindh Govt & SEPA Respond

In its reply, the Sindh government and Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) assured the court that new trees are being planted to replace those removed. Officials acknowledged the environmental risks of deforestation and claimed steps were being taken to mitigate the damage.

The Court’s Previous Orders

Earlier, the SHC had made it clear: no tree can be removed in Sindh without explicit permission from the competent authority and the sessions judge. It also urged that relocation should be prioritized over destruction.

Why It Matters for Karachi’s Climate

Experts warn that reducing tree cover during periods of extreme heat could worsen the city’s climate crisis. Fewer trees mean higher temperatures, reduced shade, and increased urban heat island effects.
