Donkey Prices in Pakistan Skyrocket Amid Rising Demand from China

In a surprising turn of events, the price of donkeys in Pakistan has surged dramatically, with the cost of a single donkey reaching up to Rs. 300,000. This price hike is largely driven by increased demand from China, where donkey hides are used in the production of various cosmetics and traditional medicines.

According to a report by Express Tribune, this rising demand has made it challenging for local buyers to afford donkeys, significantly reducing local trade. The focus now lies on meeting China’s growing appetite for donkey hides, which are a key ingredient in several Chinese beauty and health products.

Donkey traders are actively purchasing donkeys for export, further driving up prices. This trend has affected local communities, who traditionally use donkeys for transport and labor.

In July 2024, Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Commerce recommended the export of live donkeys to China, not just their hides, to take advantage of this growing market. While donkey hide exports to China are unrestricted, officials are currently working on protocols for exporting donkey meat as well, indicating further expansion in this unusual trade.
