In a major political development, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has thrown its support behind Shehbaz Sharif, president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). MQM-P’s backing significantly boosts Sharif’s chances in the upcoming election for Pakistan’s prime minister.
This alliance was forged during a meeting between top leaders of both parties on Saturday. Key PML-N figures, including Ahsan Iqbal, Saad Rafique, and Rana Tanveer, met with MQM-P leaders Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Farooq Sattar, Mustafa Kamal, Aminul Haq, and Aasia Ishaq.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mustafa Kamal of MQM-P pledged his party’s support for Sharif. “We stand with the Nawaz-League and will support them fully. Our prayers are with Shehbaz Sharif for his success,” he declared.
PML-N leader Rana Tanveer Hussain expressed gratitude for MQM-P’s backing. He explained that Shehbaz Sharif, although unwell, had intended to personally meet with MQM-P leaders to seek their support.
This collaboration between the PML-N and MQM-P marks a significant shift in Pakistan’s political landscape. With the MQM-P on board, Shehbaz Sharif is well-positioned to secure the important role of prime minister.
