Malir Expressway Set to Open First Segment on January 11

Inauguration of a Key Urban Corridor

The Sindh government has announced the inauguration of the first phase of the Malir Expressway, a high-speed, access-controlled corridor designed to revolutionize Karachi’s transport network. The 9.1 km stretch, connecting Korangi Causeway to Shah Faisal, will officially open on January 11, 2025, as per a statement from Sindh CM House.

Significance of the Malir Expressway

This expressway is the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project in Sindh. It spans approximately 40 km, linking Korangi Creek Avenue in DHA to the M-9 Motorway near Kathore. The project aims to reduce travel time, alleviate traffic congestion, and provide seamless access to key residential and commercial areas.

Key Features of the First Phase

  • Three-Lane Dual Carriageway: Modern infrastructure with dedicated interchanges.
  • Ramp for Traffic Flow: The initial phase includes a ramp to ensure immediate utility.
  • Interchange Developments: Construction at the Jam Sadiq and Shah Faisal interchanges is ongoing, with improvements at EBM Interchange nearing completion.

Toll and Security Measures

A toll plaza will regulate traffic, charging Rs100 for cars and jeeps and Rs200 for heavy vehicles. Traffic police, fire brigades, and ambulances will be stationed along the route to ensure safety. The expressway is a no-parking zone, and motorcycles and rickshaws are prohibited.
