The Karachi Development Authority has confirmed that the much-anticipated Karimabad Underpass in Karachi will be opened to traffic by April 10, bringing relief to commuters in one of the city’s busiest corridors.
According to KDA Director General Asif Jan Siddiqui, construction work is progressing at a rapid pace, with teams working around the clock to meet the revised deadline. Officials say the project has entered its final phase and will soon be ready for public use.
The underpass spans approximately 1.1 kilometers and is designed to streamline traffic flow in the congested Karimabad area. Construction originally began in December 2023 with a planned completion timeline of one year, but the project experienced multiple delays along the way.
Costs have also risen significantly during the course of development. The initial estimate of Rs. 1.35 billion has now escalated to around Rs. 3.83 billion, reflecting increased material costs and extended construction timelines.
Despite these challenges, authorities remain optimistic about the project’s long-term impact. Once operational, the Karimabad Underpass is expected to reduce traffic bottlenecks, improve travel times, and enhance daily commuting for thousands of residents.
Urban planners note that infrastructure upgrades like this are essential for managing Karachi’s growing traffic demands. As the city continues to expand, such projects play a critical role in improving mobility and supporting economic activity.
The opening of the Karimabad Underpass marks a significant step toward modernizing Karachi’s road network and addressing longstanding congestion issues in key urban areas.
