Sindh Government’s Revolutionary Plan
Karachi’s long-standing public transport woes are about to be addressed with the Sindh government’s initiative to introduce 8,000 electric buses into the city’s transit network. This project not only focuses on modernizing transport but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.
Implementation Plan in Three Phases
The government has devised a phased strategy:
- Phase 1: Deployment of 500 buses in the first year. As of now, 50 buses are already serving Karachi’s major routes.
- Phase 2: Adding 1,500 buses to expand the service further.
- Phase 3: Over four years, 4,000 to 6,000 buses will be added, along with essential infrastructure like charging stations and depots.
Green Energy Integration
A significant feature of this project is the construction of a 1GW solar power plant. The plant will ensure the sustainability of the electric fleet, providing eco-friendly energy for operations and contributing to lower carbon emissions.
Pilot Project Highlights
A pilot initiative involving 50 electric buses began in May 2024. Operated under a rent-to-own model, these buses are supplied by the National Energy & Transport Corporation (NETC) and function on a cost-per-kilometer basis.
Budget Allocations and Long-Term Goals
To ensure the project’s viability, Rs412.50 million has been allocated for 2025’s final quarter. An annual budget of Rs1.65 billion for the next eight years will support operational costs, making this a well-funded and sustainable initiative.
This groundbreaking plan promises a new era for Karachi’s public transport system, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
