Karachi Gul Plaza Tragedy Day 3: Death Toll Rises to 26 as Rescue Operations Continue

Rescue efforts at Karachi’s Gul Plaza have entered the third day, with authorities warning that the weakened building remains highly unstable. The death toll has climbed to 26, while 75 people are still reported missing, leaving families in deep distress.

So far, 20 bodies have been formally identified, and medico-legal examinations on 19 bodies have been completed. Officials have also received location information for 39 individuals believed to have been inside the building at the time of the collapse.

Ongoing Search and Rescue

Rescue 1122 teams continue to search different sections of the building despite significant risks. About 40% of Gul Plaza has collapsed, and the remaining portions are described as extremely fragile, with the potential for further collapse at any time. Workers are entering only after stringent safety checks, and authorities plan to re-enter the building today to continue recovery operations.

Identification Challenges

The identification process has been slowed due to the condition of the recovered bodies. Police Surgeon Dr. Samia reported that samples from 14 bodies have been collected, while 48 DNA samples from relatives are being processed at the Sindh Forensic DNA Lab, ICCBS, and Karachi University. One body has been identified using a national identity card.

Rooftop Vehicle Removal and Safety Measures

Authorities have begun clearing the rooftop parking lot to reduce load on the structure, removing 16 vehicles so far, including 12 motorcycles, four Suzuki cars, and one rickshaw. The Rapid Response Force and crowd management teams are ensuring public safety, with the area declared a red zone and strict instructions for citizens to stay in designated safe zones.

Clearing Operations and Official Response

Preparations are underway to formally start the clearing of the building, with safety as the top priority. Rescue and recovery efforts will continue until all missing persons are accounted for.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep sorrow over the loss of 26 lives, offering prayers for the missing and extending condolences to bereaved families. She stated, “The pain and grief of the families who lost their loved ones in this tragic fire are beyond words.”
