Cambridge, Massachusetts, has witnessed a historic milestone as Pakistani-origin politicians now hold the city’s top two leadership positions. On January 5, Sunbul Siddiqui, originally from Karachi, was re-elected Mayor for a third consecutive term (2024–2026), while Burhan Azeem, from Burewala, became the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor, 24NewsHD reported.
Sunbul Siddiqui, a lawyer by profession, has been active in American politics since her first election to the Cambridge City Council in 2017. She previously served two terms as Mayor from 2020 to 2024, becoming the first Muslim and Asian woman in Massachusetts history to secure three consecutive mayoral terms.
Burhan Azeem, son of Prof. Munir Chaudhry from Punjab’s Burewala, is an engineer from MIT Boston. He previously served as Cambridge’s youngest councilor and, after winning a second term, has now made history as the city’s youngest Deputy Mayor.
The election of Siddiqui and Azeem highlights the growing influence of the Pakistani diaspora in U.S. politics and marks a significant step in diversity and representation at the local governance level. Their leadership reflects a commitment to public service and a strengthening of community ties in Cambridge.
