The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has initiated consultations to appoint an interim management and coaching setup for Multan Sultans ahead of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 11, with several former national cricketers emerging as leading candidates.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the PCB is evaluating the names of Abdul Razzaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Taufeeq Umar for key roles within the franchise’s coaching and management structure. The move is part of a broader restructuring plan following recent changes in the team’s ownership status.
Experienced former players under consideration
All three former cricketers bring extensive experience to the table. Abdul Razzaq, a former Pakistan all-rounder, has previously served in coaching and mentoring roles and is regarded for his hands-on approach with players. Taufeeq Umar, a former Test opener, is also being considered due to his deep understanding of domestic and international cricket systems.
Among the shortlisted names, Mushtaq Ahmed appears to have a strong advantage. The former leg-spinner has previously worked with Multan Sultans as a spin consultant, giving him familiarity with the franchise’s environment, players, and operational culture. His past association is being viewed positively by decision-makers within the PCB.
Ramiz Raja linked to administrative role
Sources further revealed that former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja is also being considered for an administrative role related to the franchise. While discussions are ongoing, no formal position has been finalized so far. If appointed, Raja’s role would focus on governance and administrative oversight rather than on-field coaching.
Final approval rests with PCB chairman
The final structure of Multan Sultans’ interim management will only be confirmed after the approval of PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, sources said. His clearance will be decisive in finalizing both coaching and administrative appointments.
PCB to oversee Multan Sultans during PSL 11
For PSL 11, the PCB will directly manage all operational and administrative affairs of Multan Sultans. This temporary arrangement will remain in place throughout the season, ensuring continuity and stability for the franchise.
The board also plans to finalize a new owner after the conclusion of PSL 11. Until then, the PCB will continue overseeing team operations, including management appointments and logistical matters.
Background: Ali Tareen’s departure
The PCB’s intervention comes after former owner Ali Tareen announced his departure from Multan Sultans, citing the non-receipt of a PSL renewal letter. His exit left the franchise without ownership heading into the new season, prompting the board to step in and take control.
Despite the transitional phase, PCB officials are confident that experienced former players in the management setup will help maintain the team’s competitiveness and professionalism during PSL 11.
