Breakdown of Critical Equipment Disrupts Services at Liaquat University Hospital

A recent report submitted to Sindh health authorities has revealed serious operational challenges at Liaquat University Hospital, where at least 45 critical medical machines are currently non-functional. The situation is affecting patient care at one of the province’s largest tertiary care facilities, raising concerns about healthcare access and service delivery.

The report was compiled following an inspection by Fayyaz Abbasi and Zain Ul Abiden Memon, who highlighted significant deficiencies within the hospital’s infrastructure. Their findings point to a system under strain, particularly impacting patients who rely on public healthcare due to limited financial resources.

Among the non-operational equipment are three MRI machines and four CT scanners, both essential for advanced diagnostic imaging. Additionally, six digital X-ray units and ten ultrasound machines are out of order, further restricting routine diagnostic services. The report also noted that 17 anesthesia units are non-functional, which could directly affect surgical procedures and emergency care.

The disruption of such critical machinery is likely to result in delays in diagnosis and treatment, forcing patients to seek costly alternatives in private facilities. This situation places an added burden on low-income families, who already face challenges in accessing timely and affordable healthcare.

Healthcare experts emphasize the urgent need for repairs, maintenance, and resource allocation to restore essential services. Without immediate intervention, the ongoing equipment failures could further strain the hospital’s capacity and compromise patient outcomes.

The findings underscore broader concerns within the public health sector, where infrastructure gaps and maintenance issues continue to hinder service delivery. Ensuring functional medical equipment remains vital for improving healthcare standards and meeting the needs of the population.
