Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has announced the distribution of 500 streetlights to Union Council chairmen and 50 fumigation machines to Town chairmen as part of efforts to improve municipal services across the city.
The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) head office, where the mayor discussed measures aimed at improving basic infrastructure and strengthening municipal services in different parts of Karachi.
According to Murtaza Wahab, the streetlights were provided in response to requests from Union Council chairmen. He said the distribution was also part of a commitment made during the municipal budget session.
The addition of 500 streetlights is expected to support efforts to improve lighting in areas where residents have faced inadequate infrastructure. Better street lighting can contribute to improved visibility on roads and streets, particularly during nighttime hours.
The mayor also distributed 50 fumigation machines to Town chairmen. The equipment is intended to support municipal efforts to control mosquitoes and address public health concerns in different areas of Karachi.
Fumigation operations are particularly important during periods when mosquito populations increase. Providing Town administrations with additional equipment could allow local authorities to respond more quickly to requests for fumigation in neighborhoods.
The move comes as the Karachi administration continues to face demands for improvements in basic civic facilities. Street lighting, sanitation, mosquito control and road infrastructure remain among the key municipal issues affecting residents across the city.
Addressing the ceremony, Wahab pledged to continue working on the restoration of basic infrastructure and improvement of municipal services. The distribution of equipment is part of the broader effort to provide local administrations with resources needed to address neighborhood-level problems.
The coordination between the KMC, Town administrations and Union Councils is expected to play an important role in delivering these services. Local representatives can identify areas requiring additional streetlights or fumigation support and coordinate with relevant municipal authorities.
The provision of streetlights could also help local governments respond to long-standing complaints about dark roads and public spaces. Similarly, additional fumigation machines may strengthen the capacity of Town administrations to conduct mosquito-control operations.
The mayor’s announcement reflects a focus on practical municipal measures that directly affect everyday life in Karachi. The effectiveness of the initiative, however, will depend on how efficiently the equipment is deployed and maintained across the city.
As Karachi continues to deal with infrastructure and municipal challenges, residents will be watching whether these commitments lead to visible improvements in their neighborhoods. The latest distribution provides local administrations with additional resources to address some of the city’s basic service needs.
