Karachi Braces for Intense Heat as PMD Issues Heatwave Alert

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi, warning residents to prepare for a significant rise in temperatures over the coming days.

According to the latest forecast from the Met Office, the port city is expected to experience hot and humid weather conditions throughout the week, with temperatures gradually increasing as a strong weather system influences the region.

From Saturday through Monday, temperatures in Karachi are likely to remain between 28°C and 38°C. While these conditions are typical for the summer season, meteorologists have cautioned that the heat is expected to intensify from June 8 onward.

The PMD forecasts that maximum temperatures could climb to between 40°C and 43°C from June 8 to June 12, creating heatwave-like conditions across the city. The prolonged period of extreme heat may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.

Experts warn that exposure to high temperatures for extended periods can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and wear light, breathable clothing whenever possible.

The heatwave alert comes as several parts of Pakistan are expected to experience above-normal temperatures due to a high-pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere. Weather experts have noted that climate change and changing weather patterns are contributing to more frequent and intense heat events across the country.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain informed through official weather updates and follow precautionary measures issued by health and disaster management departments. Employers are also encouraged to take necessary steps to protect outdoor workers from extreme heat exposure.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city and economic hub, often experiences challenging weather conditions during the summer months. However, the expected rise in temperatures this week has prompted officials to issue early warnings to help residents prepare and stay safe.

With temperatures potentially reaching 43°C, citizens are advised to exercise caution and prioritize their health as Karachi faces one of its hottest periods of the season.
