Karachi’s traffic police have intensified their crackdown on reckless driving and traffic law violations, issuing 2,790 electronic challans (e-challans) in just twenty-four hours across the city, according to an official report released on Monday.
The report revealed that the majority of fines were issued to drivers for not wearing seat belts, accounting for 1,607 challans. The enforcement campaign aims to enhance road safety, reduce accident risks, and promote awareness among motorists about responsible driving practices.
In addition, 59 drivers were fined for speeding, while 59 motorcyclists faced penalties for riding without helmets. Authorities emphasized that these infractions not only endanger the violators but also pose significant risks to other road users.
The city’s traffic management system also penalized 150 vehicles for running red signals, highlighting the ongoing issue of signal violations, which remain one of the major causes of traffic accidents in Karachi.
Further breakdown of violations showed that 73 drivers were fined for using mobile phones while driving, 13 for illegal parking, and 5 for overloading. Traffic officials also noted 3 stop-line violations, 8 one-way breaches, and 59 cases involving black-tinted mirrors, which are banned under local traffic laws.
Officials stated that the digital e-challan system, integrated with smart cameras and surveillance tools, allows for real-time detection and issuance of fines. This system is part of Karachi’s broader smart traffic initiative designed to improve compliance and reduce manual interference in the enforcement process.
Traffic authorities have urged citizens to follow road safety rules, avoid mobile phone usage while driving, and ensure proper vehicle documentation. They reiterated that ongoing monitoring through cameras across major intersections will continue, and violations will automatically trigger electronic fines without the need for on-site police intervention.
The recent enforcement drive serves as a reminder that maintaining discipline on the roads is essential for everyone’s safety. Authorities are expected to expand the smart monitoring network to more areas in the coming months to strengthen Karachi’s urban mobility and ensure safer roads for all commuters.
