Deal aims to expand Pakistan’s air freight network and boost revenue
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has entered into a landmark cargo partnership with Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s newly launched national airline, marking a major step toward strengthening Pakistan’s presence in the global aviation and logistics market.
According to a PIA spokesperson, the agreement officially took effect on October 29, allowing both carriers to collaborate on air cargo operations between Pakistan, London, and Riyadh. Under the arrangement, freight will be transported from Pakistan and the UK to Riyadh, where it will then be distributed to international destinations through the combined network of both airlines.
Boosting cargo capacity and global reach
The collaboration is designed to significantly expand PIA’s cargo operations and enhance revenue generation by tapping into Riyadh Air’s growing route network and advanced cargo handling infrastructure.
PIA termed the partnership a “strategic milestone” in meeting the surging global demand for air freight. The airline aims to leverage the agreement to position itself as a key regional player in cargo transport, particularly across the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.
“The agreement with Riyadh Air marks a crucial step in PIA’s business expansion strategy,” the spokesperson said, emphasizing that the partnership will improve logistics efficiency, offer faster delivery timelines, and increase freight handling capacity.
Part of PIA’s long-term business strategy
As part of its broader restructuring and modernization plan, PIA has been actively exploring new partnerships to diversify income streams beyond passenger services. The focus on cargo growth comes as global e-commerce and trade logistics continue to expand rapidly.
Riyadh Air, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), is poised to become a major regional aviation player, with plans to connect the Kingdom to more than 100 destinations worldwide by 2030. The partnership with PIA aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 goals to transform Riyadh into a global transportation and logistics hub.
Aviation analysts say the collaboration will benefit both airlines — helping PIA strengthen its regional network and giving Riyadh Air access to Pakistan’s fast-growing export markets.
