Energy Ministry cuts unit price to Rs. 15,000 under 2025-26 modernization plan
The Ministry of Energy has officially launched a nationwide rollout of smart meters as part of its 2025–26 customer service improvement drive, aimed at modernizing Pakistan’s electricity distribution network.
According to a ministry spokesperson, the initiative will help improve billing accuracy, reduce power theft, and restore public trust in electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).
“This step marks a turning point in modernizing the national grid and ensuring fair, transparent billing for consumers,” the spokesperson said.
Smart meter prices reduced
In a major relief for consumers, the ministry confirmed that smart meter prices have been reduced from approximately Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 15,000 per single-phase unit following strict procurement reforms and competitive bidding processes.
Officials said the cost reduction was a key factor in unlocking the large-scale rollout plan, which had previously been delayed due to high equipment costs.
The new meters will enable real-time consumption monitoring, remote disconnection and reconnection, and automated reading, significantly cutting manual intervention and human error in billing.
The Ministry of Energy emphasized that the program aligns with the government’s digital infrastructure goals and will ultimately help reduce line losses and improve overall efficiency in the power sector.
Further phases of the rollout are expected to prioritize urban centers and high-loss regions, with gradual expansion to other areas over the next two years.
