Strict Measures Against Human Trafficking
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to take immediate and stringent action against human trafficking networks that continue to bring international disrepute to Pakistan. Chairing a high-level meeting on Wednesday, the premier expressed his concern over the rising incidents of human trafficking, particularly in light of the recent boat tragedy in Greece involving Pakistani nationals.
Accountability for Recurring Incidents
Highlighting the gravity of the issue, PM Sharif pointed out the repeated tragedies, including the loss of 262 Pakistani lives in a similar incident last year. He criticized the slow pace of action against the perpetrators, emphasizing that these lapses allow such incidents to persist.
Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) to be Implemented
The prime minister instructed authorities to expedite the implementation of the Integrated Border Management System (IBMS) to enhance monitoring of international travel and curb illegal movements. This system is expected to play a pivotal role in tracking and deterring human traffickers.
Progress Report and Awareness Campaigns
During the briefing, it was disclosed that 174 human traffickers had been presented in court, resulting in four convictions. The PM demanded a comprehensive report from the FIA and the foreign ministry detailing incidents of human trafficking involving Pakistani citizens over the past year. He also stressed the need for robust public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of illegal migration.
International Cooperation Encouraged
PM Sharif underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration with global institutions to prevent future tragedies and dismantle international trafficking networks.
Participants of the Meeting
The meeting was attended by key federal ministers, including Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Syed Mohsin Naqvi, alongside senior officials and advisors such as Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi and Coordinator Rana Ehsan Afzal.
