Residents of Karachi are grappling with a water shortage following a major power breakdown at the Karachi Pumping Station. The disruption, which occurred at 5 am on December 21, 2025, at the Old Pump House in North East Karachi, has affected water supply across several areas, including Scheme No. 33.
A spokesperson for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed that despite 22 hours passing since the outage, K-Electric had not yet resolved the fault. The power interruption has caused the city to lose approximately 15 million gallons of water, intensifying the ongoing water crisis for Karachiites.
This incident is not isolated. In November 2025, repeated electricity outages by K-Electric similarly disrupted water pumping operations, worsening the city’s water scarcity. The KWSC spokesperson revealed that the crucial K-3 pumping station also experienced a significant electrical breakdown late last night. The station had previously faced a 41-hour outage, with power restored only shortly before the latest failure.
Technical issues at the stations have resulted in a cumulative loss of an estimated 335 million gallons of water, highlighting the vulnerability of Karachi’s water supply system to power disruptions. The persistent breakdowns have raised serious concerns about K-Electric’s maintenance practices and the city’s preparedness to ensure continuous water delivery.

Residents are now left struggling to meet daily water needs, while authorities continue to appeal for swift action to restore electricity and resume full water supply. The repeated outages underscore the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and better coordination between water and electricity providers to prevent further crises.
