Karachi to Receive Modern Heavy Vehicle Terminal on Northern Bypass

The Sindh government has approved the construction of a modern terminal for trucks, trailers, and other heavy-loading vehicles outside Karachi as part of a broader plan to improve traffic management and urban transport infrastructure in the city.

The project also includes the development of a dedicated heavy vehicle corridor connecting Karachi Port to the proposed terminal located on the Northern Bypass. Officials believe the initiative will significantly reduce traffic congestion caused by large commercial vehicles moving through busy city roads.

The decision was approved during a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Several major transport and infrastructure projects were reportedly discussed and cleared during the session.

According to Sharjeel Memon, the new heavy vehicle terminal is expected to improve the overall transport system in Karachi by shifting truck and trailer activity away from densely populated urban areas. He stated that the dedicated corridor between Karachi Port and the terminal would help ensure smoother movement of cargo vehicles while easing pressure on the city’s roads.

Karachi, Pakistan’s largest commercial hub, frequently faces severe traffic congestion due to the movement of heavy transport vehicles, especially around industrial zones and port areas. Authorities have long considered the construction of a separate heavy vehicle infrastructure network necessary to improve road safety and traffic flow.

Urban planning experts say the proposed terminal and dedicated route could help reduce travel delays, improve logistics operations, and minimize the risk of accidents involving heavy vehicles within residential and commercial districts.

The project is also expected to support trade and transportation efficiency by streamlining cargo movement from port facilities to external transport routes. Officials believe the initiative could become a major step toward modernizing Karachi’s transport infrastructure and addressing long-standing traffic challenges.

Further details regarding construction timelines, funding, and operational planning are expected to be announced after the project moves into the implementation phase.
