Major Karachi Underpass Misses Another Deadline

The much-anticipated Meena Bazaar underpass in Karimabad has missed yet another completion deadline, extending delays that have already stretched beyond two years. The infrastructure project, aimed at easing traffic congestion in one of Karachi’s busiest corridors, remains unfinished despite repeated assurances.

Authorities had most recently announced that the underpass would open in the first week of February 2026. However, the deadline has passed, and construction work is still ongoing. Commuters in the area continue to face traffic bottlenecks and diversions due to the incomplete structure.

The project is located in the Karimabad area of Karachi, a key junction connecting multiple residential and commercial neighborhoods. Once operational, the underpass is expected to streamline traffic flow between Azizabad and Musa Colony while reducing congestion at the busy Meena Bazaar intersection.

Currently, construction crews are focused on shuttering side walls along the stretch from Azizabad toward Musa Colony. Officials have stated that roofing work will begin once the wall structure is finalized. Following that phase, road construction inside the underpass and painting will be carried out before the project becomes functional.

In addition to the tunnel itself, work remains incomplete on the roundabout above the underpass and adjoining roads. These components are critical for ensuring smooth traffic circulation at ground level. Without finishing these elements, the underpass cannot be fully integrated into the existing road network.

Repeated delays have raised concerns among residents and traders in the area. Many local businesses have reported disruptions due to prolonged construction activity and restricted access to shops. Daily commuters have also expressed frustration over traffic diversions and extended travel times.

Urban development experts note that infrastructure projects in major cities often face delays due to funding constraints, design revisions, or logistical challenges. However, the extended timeline of the Karimabad underpass has intensified calls for improved project management and transparency.

Authorities have yet to announce a revised completion date. Until a clear timeline is provided, uncertainty will continue to surround the project’s final delivery.

Once completed, the underpass is expected to provide long-term relief to traffic congestion in central Karachi. For now, however, residents and motorists must continue navigating construction zones as the city awaits the project’s long-overdue inauguration.
