The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a major infrastructure renewal initiative aimed at improving road conditions and easing traffic flow across Pakistan’s largest city. Under the project, 26 internal roads will be rehabilitated with a total allocation of approximately Rs. 5.54 billion, according to an official statement issued on Friday.
The project will cover a combined road length of 68 kilometers, targeting areas that have long suffered from poor surface conditions, congestion, and delayed maintenance. City officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize Karachi’s urban infrastructure and improve connectivity within key residential and commercial zones.
According to KMC, the road rehabilitation program is aligned with the Sindh government’s urban development strategy, which prioritizes improved mobility, reduced travel time, and safer road networks. The upgraded roads are expected to enhance traffic circulation and reduce pressure on major arteries by improving internal link roads across different districts.
Authorities noted that deteriorating road conditions have significantly contributed to traffic congestion, vehicle damage, and safety concerns in Karachi. By rehabilitating internal roads, the city administration aims to create smoother traffic distribution and support daily commuting for thousands of residents.
The project scope includes resurfacing damaged sections, strengthening road foundations, improving drainage systems where required, and addressing long-standing maintenance gaps. Officials emphasized that special attention will be given to construction quality to ensure durability and minimize the need for frequent repairs.
Urban planners believe that improved internal road networks can play a crucial role in easing congestion on major corridors such as Shahrah-e-Faisal, MAJ Road, and other high-traffic routes. Better road conditions within neighborhoods are also expected to support local businesses and improve access to essential services.
KMC officials stated that the infrastructure upgrade is being executed as part of a phased development approach, ensuring minimal disruption to daily traffic while work progresses. Coordination with traffic police and local authorities will be maintained to manage diversions and maintain smooth vehicular movement during construction.
The announcement comes amid growing public demand for improved infrastructure in Karachi, where rapid urbanization and population growth have placed immense pressure on existing road networks. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns over potholes, waterlogging, and uneven surfaces, particularly during the monsoon season.
With this Rs. 5.54 billion investment, the city administration aims to signal renewed commitment to addressing Karachi’s long-standing infrastructure challenges. Officials say the success of the project could pave the way for additional road rehabilitation initiatives across the metropolis in the coming years.
