The 10th spell of the monsoon season has struck Sindh, bringing torrential rains to Karachi, Hyderabad, and other cities. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning of urban flooding, with rainfall expected to continue until September 10.
Schools Closed as Precaution
In response to the heavy downpours, schools in Hyderabad have been ordered shut, while several private schools in Karachi have also declared holidays. Authorities stated that safety measures are essential as rain intensity increases across the province.
Karachi Faces Risk of Flooding
Rain showers began early Tuesday morning in multiple areas of Karachi. The Met Office predicts thunderstorms with heavy rain across the city, raising the likelihood of severe waterlogging and disruption to daily life. The situation may worsen over the next 24 hours.
Islamabad and Lahore Rain Forecast
In Islamabad, partly cloudy skies dominate, with thunderstorms and scattered showers expected later today. The rainfall has already filled Tarbela and Rawal dams to capacity. Lahore, meanwhile, is expected to receive rain by evening, with a maximum temperature of 32°C and humidity levels near 91 percent.
Hyderabad Records Heavy Rain
Hyderabad has received 85mm of rain in the last 24 hours, with Latifabad recording 63mm. Streets such as Thandi Sarak, Maki Shah Road, and Qadam Gah Mola Ali Road remain submerged, disrupting normal life. Flooded streets and stagnant water have paralyzed city traffic.
Continuous Rains in Khairpur
Khairpur witnessed its second consecutive day of heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and extended power outages. In Khairpur Nathan Shah and Mehar, streams have overflowed, cutting off nearby villages. Agricultural lands, particularly cotton crops, have suffered severe losses.
Nawabshah, Moenjodaro, and Larkana
Rain has also battered Nawabshah, Larkana, and Moenjodaro, where floodwaters have entered homes and shops. Multiple electricity feeders have tripped, compounding the difficulties for residents already grappling with submerged streets.
Hospital Roof Collapse in Hyderabad
Tragedy struck when the roof of the gynecology ward at Bhatai Hospital collapsed, injuring five people. They were immediately shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment. This comes just months after a similar roof collapse in Hyderabad’s Tandojam town, where two children lost their lives.
A Growing Crisis
With Sindh experiencing its 10th monsoon spell, the risk of infrastructure damage, crop destruction, and public safety hazards is mounting. Emergency services remain on high alert, but recurring incidents highlight the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and stronger drainage systems.
